Beyond Sight: Inclusive Clinical Care and Self-Advocacy for African, Black, and Caribbean Patients Living with Low or No Vision
UC Riverside School of Medicine | University of California Health | Blindness Support Services Inc.
Yvette Dubel, CLC, was honored to serve as a co-presenter at the 2026 UC PRIME Statewide Conference — a gathering of future physicians and health equity leaders from across the University of California system.
The presentation, Beyond Sight, was born from a conversation between Yvette and a UC Riverside medical student — a moment of genuine connection that became the catalyst for an entire workshop. That conversation is a living example of what the Empowered Innovation Alliance believes: that the most meaningful breakthroughs begin with listening, and that healing-centered relationships spark the ideas that change systems.
Beyond Sight addressed the urgent need for inclusive clinical care and patient self-advocacy for African, Black, and Caribbean communities living with low or no vision — populations whose experiences are too often overlooked in both medical training and systemic care design.
This collaboration reflects EIA’s core commitment: that innovation rooted in community, care, and lived experience is the kind that lasts.
